Master Class For Buffalo’s Teaching Artists

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Western New York Book Arts Center (WNYBAC) will host a Teaching Artist Development program for artists and teachers in the Buffalo area in early April.

Lincoln Center Education, the New York-based education division of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, will conduct the Teaching Artist Development program. It will be held at WNYBAC from April 2-6, and will consist of two three-day labs for teachers with different levels of experience.

Melissa Rechin, retail operations manager of WNYBAC, said, “We are very honouredto be hosting the Lincoln Center Education in order to create and promote a broader teaching artist community in Buffalo.”
-
The “Fundamentals for Teaching Artistry” lab for teachers with 0-three years of experience will address topics such as connecting teaching artistry to individual art, designing effective activities, creating high-impact workshops, discovering the importance of flexibility in planning and facilitation, and finding work and building a career in the arts education field.
-
The “Developing Your Practice” lab will cater to teaching artists with three or more years of experience. The lab will explore topics including activating the artistry of others, weaving inquiry and active reflection into the workshop experience, and learning how the personal teaching-artist philosophy can sustain and inspire individual art.
Leading arts learning consultant Eric Booth said, “The LCE Teaching Artist Development Lab is the most important new training opportunity in the U.S., probably in the world – it stands on the leading edge of the field and is a high-impact way to advance the work of teaching artists, from beginners to advanced professionals.”

The Teaching Artist Development program is open to all teaching artists in the Buffalo area. The workshop provides practical skills and is free for all participants. Interested participants can sign up for the program on Lincoln Center Education’s website.

WNYBAC will also host a teaching artists networking event for all participants of the program at Angelica Tea Room, 517 Washington St., Buffalo. The event will be held on Wednesday, April 4 from 5-7 p.m. and is open to all arts and cultural educators, coordinators, and directors.
